How to Make a Velocity Slow-Motion Edit in VN App (Beat Sync) 2026

A velocity edit is the fast–slow–fast effect you see in dance and bike reels: the clip runs fast, suddenly slows down on the beat, then speeds up again. It looks like someone used expensive software, but the free VN app already has everything you need. Below is the full method, from the start, with your own song.

Why this effect works

The brain notices a change in speed, not the speed itself. So slowing down the whole clip does nothing. The effect works when something moving fast suddenly almost stops on the beat. This is why, in a velocity edit, timing makes the biggest difference, not the effect.

Second point: keep the slow part short. Half a second to one second is enough. A long slow part feels boring and also looks choppy.

What you need

VN Video Editor: it is free, on both iPhone and Android.
A clip with movement: a dance step, hair flip, bike pass or a turn. This effect does not show at all on a still clip.
Shoot in 60fps. Go to your phone settings and set video to 1080p 60fps. This one thing takes care of up to 90% of the slow-motion quality.
A song with a clear drop or beat.

Step by step: velocity edit in VN

Open a new 9:16 project and add your clip. Then add the song.
Mark the beats. Select the music track, play the song and add a marker on every big beat. This is the most important step. Without markers, you build the curve by guessing and the sync never fits properly.
Select the clip → Speed → Curve. This is the speed ramp.
Shape the curve like this: up (fast) before the beat, down (slow) on the beat, and up again after the beat. Bring the low point exactly above your marker.
Turn on Smooth / frame blending if your VN has the option. The slow part comes out cleaner.
On each beat, add a light zoom-in and a short flash or shake transition. Keep it small. If you add too much, it will look cheap.
Export in 1080p 60fps and post it with the same song.

Three mistakes everyone makes

Slowing down the whole clip. Then there is no contrast left. The fast part is what makes the slow part look slow.
Going below 0.3x. If you stretch 30fps footage that much, the frames will break up. Stop at 0.5x, or shoot in 60fps.
Adding a drop on every beat. In 6–12 seconds, 2–3 slow drops are enough. If you add more, the reel will feel tiring.

For a better result

Put the slow part on the best moment of the move: a jump, turn or flip. If you put it in the middle, it will be wasted.
Keep the camera steady and let the subject move. If both move, the slow motion feels strange.
When you shoot, record a little extra before and after. The curve needs room.
After export, watch the whole thing once on your phone, with sound. That is where you catch sync mistakes.

Why does the slow motion look choppy?

A 30fps video does not have enough frames to stretch that far. There are only two fixes: shoot in 60fps next time, or do not go below 0.5x. Frame blending helps a little, but it cannot replace real frames.

Can I copy someone else’s velocity preset?

Yes, if someone shares their VN project code, you can import it. But that code is made for that song and that clip, so the sync often shifts on your clip.
