Google’s Gemini agent aims to finish work, not just answer questions

From answers to outcomes

Google is taking another step toward AI that can do tasks. At its Gemini at Work event on October 8, 2026, Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent, describing it as a universal agent for work. The initial focus is businesses, not a confirmed launch for every personal Gemini account.

An AI chatbot mainly responds to questions. An AI agent is designed to use tools and follow several steps toward a goal. Google says its new agent can plan work, connect to business systems and bring back a finished result inside the tools people already use.

How businesses could use it

Google’s detailed announcement describes giving the agent objectives rather than detailed instructions for each step. Users can supply project context, skills and connected tools to help it carry out a task. The goal is to reduce manual switching between workplace applications.

The announced connections include Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira and business databases. These capabilities depend on the systems and permissions a company sets up; they should not be read as unlimited access to everyone’s documents.

Google also describes model routing across its own Gemini models and Anthropic’s Claude models, with other choices planned. The agent and the underlying model are separate decisions, rather than one model being required for every task.

Oversight still matters

The TechCrunch report describes a tasks inbox for tracking progress. Google says coworker agents can have their own Workspace identities, and their actions are recorded in an audit trail attributed to the agent.

For businesses, knowing what changed and who needs to approve it matters as much as speed. Google highlights security, administration and cost controls. Those are company claims about system design, not independent proof that every workplace task will run without errors.

Availability is not the same as an announcement

Launch-day reporting by 9to5Google describes the Gemini agent as being in private preview, with wider availability planned for eligible Workspace customers. Do not assume that announcing it means these features have reached every business—or the regular consumer Gemini app.

My take

AI that finishes a useful task could be more valuable than AI that only explains how to do it. I would still want clear permissions, visible progress and a chance to review important actions before trusting it with real work.

For a creator team, a sensible first evaluation would use non-sensitive project files and a draft-only task. Check the output before allowing external messages, production changes or other consequential actions. That is an editorial suggestion, not a workflow we have tested with this new agent.
